Renewables Accounted for 67% Of UK Electricity Over Weekend

August 1, 2023

Renewable energy accounted for more than two-thirds of the UK’s electricity over the weekend, breaking previous records.

The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) revealed renewables comprised 67 per cent of power, led by wind energy.

On Saturday, wind accounted for more than half (54.9 per cent) of the electricity supply in the UK, with a similar figure recorded on Sunday (50.6 per cent).

Nuclear energy (16.8 per cent), gas (12.6 per cent), solar energy (7.2 per cent), biomass (4.4 per cent), and hydropower (0.9 per cent) also contributed to the renewable energy mix on Saturday.

Coal, on the other hand, contributed zero per cent to Britain’s energy supply throughout the weekend, as the last operating coal mine was shut eight years ago.

Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire was closed in 2015 and was finally capped off early in 2016.

Despite the record-breaking news, chief executive of Energy UK Emma Pinchbeck said the UK needs to do more to boost renewable energy production.

Speaking on Newsnight, Ms Pinchbeck, who took over the position earlier this year, exclaimed that even Ukraine has built more wind turbines over the last 12 months, despite being at war with Russia during that time.

Brits can help boost the proportion of electricity supply being generated from renewables by investing in solar panels in Hull. For more information on price and installation, give us a call today.
